Well I'm really jealous as well. Lola is due in season anyday, but bound to be late ! We too are hoping to use the rather handsome Caitlins Bear. I hope you've been successful and I look forward to seeing the pictures!
Bears latest puppies are absolutely beautiful. I too can't wait and tempting fate by looking at whelping boxes etc!!
Good luck xx

Wow!!!!! Thats great news - two lots of Bears puppies............ Where abouts do you stay - we are south of Scotland. His puppies just now are simply delicious and I saw some photos of pups up North which were just lovely too........ ARe you hoping to keep one of the puppies yourself? We cant make up our minds as we already have Treacle as well as Rosie but doubt if we will be able to resist the temptation :D :D

On the topic of whelping I wonder if anyone can recommend a really good, basic, book? Someone also mentioned a DVD which I thought might be a good idea. It is probably about 20 years since we had a litter of pups so a bit out of practice

Hope your lady comes into season soooooon and then we can compare notes - cant wait :D :D

We're new to all this as well. I haven't a book but I do look on a lot of Breeder websites to get info! They even have plans for whelping boxes etc so my husband is going to have to test out his joinery skills! I can't wait to get started. When is Rosies scan?
Keep in touch. Love Dianne :D

Hi Dianne

Youre lucky - would take my hubby about 20 years to make a whelping box if previous household projects are anything to go by   I think we will go for a plastic one as they seem easy to clean and you can take them apart when finished (unfortunately that also means that you need to put them together in the first place and going on what I have just told you I should maybe buy one now..............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Rosie should get her scan around the beginning of the second week in April so fingers crossed. I am going to be soooooo disappointed now if she isnt having babies. I tell you though that the more I am reading about whelping the more worried I am becomming   There does seem to be so much that could go wrong. One of my friends breeds Coton du Tuleir (dont think that is the right spelling, not a strong point!) and she is coming to visit soon so will need to ask her lots of questions and hopefully get some guidance. All I keep hearing is that you have to remain calm - CALM - !!??

Anyway, will keep in touch and let you know asap when I have her scanned. Feel like we are cousins now or something - will be great to swap photos of puppies and mums.

Take care, Elaine xxxx

Hi :D

There's a brilliant book called 'The Book of the Bitch', it's almost like a breeder's bible :) Lots of information and advice in there. Another couple of good books are 'The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies' by Muriel P Lee and 'The Complete Book of Dog Breeding' by Dan Rice. They also have plans for whelping boxes in 'The Book of the Bitch'. I would say that the most important thing to have in a whelping box are the puppy rails around the sides, which help to provide a safe place for the puppies to crawl under and avoid being squashed by their mum.
Good luck, hope to hear good news soon

Hi Jasper

Thanks for the advice :D :D Will defo get The Book of the Bitch as a few people have said it is very good. I think that the plastic whelping box I was looking at does have puppy rails but will pay particular attention to that. It has been suggested that we get a 4 x 4 size box for her so that she can lie out flat and there will be plenty of room for her and the babies ( :D :D ). May need to move hubby out to make room for it, ha ha. Will let you all know how we get on - this is worse than when my daughter was having her first......................

Thanks so much- cant wait :D :D I remember when our pony was scanned and it was like magic - you could see the outline of the foal as if it was a photo. I realise, from speaking to people who have bred a litter, that the dogs scan isnt so clear but even so, it is a BIG day in my diary.

Dont worry - will tell you all - probably sing it from the rooftops

Well folks - ITS GOOD NEWS :D :D :D Rosie had her scan yesterday and we could see at least four little black blobs on screen - now have huge excitement tinged with huge worry   Much to hubby's horror have also started some serious internet shopping - lots to look at and lots to buy!!!!!!! Mum to be is keeping well though off her food a wee bit at the moment. She has also just started to look a little swollen around her teats too. Some families are coming to meet her this week so have had a word in her ear and told her to be on her best behaviour and have told Treacle to pack a bag and move out for a few days (only joking..............!!!)

Will keep you all up to date with our news and hope to hear about all the other babies due soon, or planned soon, whenever you all get the chance. Its great to have folk to chat with about all the wee bits and pieces that new breeders need to learn about. Thanks for all your help and support.
